Unniyappam is a popular South Indian snack or sweet treat that is made from wheat flour, sugar, and a few other ingredients. It is a type of deep-fried dumpling or fritter and is a traditional dish in the South Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Unniyappam is typically prepared during festivals, special occasions, or as a delicious snack.n

n

Here's how unniyappam is typically made:

n

Ingredients:

n

Wheat flour: The primary ingredient in this unniyappam is, of course, wheat flour and all purpose flour. It provides the base for the dumpling and gives it a distinct texture.

n

Sugar: It imparts a unique caramel-like flavor to the dish.

n

Ripe bananas: Mashed ripe bananas are often added to the batter, not only for sweetness but also to provide moisture and a subtle banana flavor.

n

Coconut: Grated coconut is a common ingredient, adding a mild coconut flavor and texture to the unniyappam.

n

Cardamom: Ground cardamom seeds are used to flavor the dish, giving it a delightful aromatic quality.

n

Baking soda or yeast: Some recipes call for a leavening agent like baking soda or yeast to make the unniyappam light and airy.

n

Oil: Oil is used for frying the dumplings. Traditionally, ghee is preferred for its rich flavor, but vegetable oil works as well.

n

Instructions:

n

In a mixing bowl, combine wheat flour, all purpose flour, mashed ripe bananas, grated coconut, sugar, ground cardamom, and any leavening agent if you're using one. Mix these ingredients well to form a thick batter. The consistency should be similar to pancake batter.

n

Heat oil in a deep frying pan

n

Once the oil is hot, carefully pour a spoonful of the batter to it.

n

Allow the unniyappam to cook on one side until it turns golden brown and crisp. Then, flip them over using a skewer or a fork and cook the other side until it's evenly browned.

n

Remove the fried unniyappam from the pan and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

n

Repeat the process with the remaining batter, adding more oil as needed.

n

Serve unniyappam while they are still warm. They are best enjoyed fresh and can be a delightful snack or dessert.

n

Unniyappam is loved for its sweet and slightly crispy exterior with a soft, flavorful interior. It's a wonderful treat to enjoy with a cup of tea or as a special dessert during festive occasions.
