Chutney is a traditional condiment especially prepared as a side dish in India. There are a dozens of varieties of chutneys available. Mostly you will see its is made green in color with mint or coriander. The one made for idli and dosa have grated coconut in it. You may also see other varieties of chutney made of tamarind that goes well with Vada pav and Samosa. This is a simple recipe of tomato chutney which similar to sauce for idli and dosa.
I said as tomato chutney since the main ingredient in this recipe is tomato itself. You can make this with recipes with any varieties of tomato especially which have very less sour taste. This is also good to have with Poori.
Tomatoes are ground to a fine paste along with onion and grated coconut and then seasoned with curry leaves. Check out this easy and quick recipe of tomato chutney and enjoy with hot dosas.
Ingredients
Grated coconut – 1 cup
Onion chopped – 1
Tomatoes chopped – 2
Green chilli – 1
Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
Chana dal – 1 teaspoon
Urad dal – 1/2 teaspoon
Dry red chillies – 3
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Salt – as needed
Water – 1/4 cup

Method of preparation
Heat oil in a kadai and splutter 1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds followed by chana dal and urad dal.
Add green chilli and sauté for few seconds.
Add finely chopped onion and tomatoes.
Add salt, sauté again and then add grated coconut.
Transfer this coconut mix to a mixer and blend it to a fine paste by adding 1/4 cup of water.
Take a bowl and add chutney to it.
Heat oil in a tadka and splutter 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds, dry red chillies and curry leaves.
Season the tadka ingredients over the chutney, mix well and serve with idli and dosas.
