Tomato Chutney

Chutney is a traditional condiment, especially prepared as a side dish in India. There are dozens of varieties of chutneys available. Most commonly, you will find green chutneys made with mint or coriander. The chutney made for idli and dosa usually contains grated coconut. Additionally, tamarind-based chutneys pair well with snacks like vada pav and samosa.

This is a simple and delicious tomato chutney recipe, which serves as a perfect sauce for idli and dosa.

This chutney gets its name because the primary ingredient is tomato. You can use any variety of tomatoes, preferably those with a mild sour taste. This chutney also pairs well with poori.

Tomatoes are ground to a fine paste along with onion and grated coconut and then seasoned with curry leaves. Follow this easy and quick recipe to enjoy flavorful tomato chutney with hot dosas.

Ingredients

  • Grated coconut – 1 cup
  • Onion (chopped) – 1
  • Tomatoes (chopped) – 2
  • Green chili – 1
  • Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Chana dal – 1 teaspoon
  • Urad dal – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Dry red chilies – 3
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Salt – as needed
  • Water – 1/4 cup
  • Oil – as needed

Method of Preparation

  1. Heat oil in a kadai and splutter 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds, followed by chana dal and urad dal.
  2. Add green chili and sauté for a few seconds.
  3. Add finely chopped onion and tomatoes.
  4. Add salt, sauté again, and then add grated coconut.
  5. Transfer this coconut mix to a mixer and blend it to a fine paste by adding 1/4 cup of water.
  6. Take a bowl and add the chutney to it.
  7. Heat oil in a tadka and splutter 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds, dry red chilies, and curry leaves.
  8. Pour the seasoned tadka over the chutney, mix well, and serve with idli and dosa.
